Snowbirds can mail in votes
By
Neil Horner May 13th, 2008
Qualicum Beach snowbirds should be able to cast their ballots from their warm refuges to the south in November's municipal election.
Council voted unanimously to support a motion by Councillor Wendy Maurer to allow mail-in ballots.
The move came after the province gave royal assent to legislation that would permit municipalities to accept the ballots.
Commenting on the move, Coun. Barry Avis said he liked the idea, noting he has received complaints from numerous seniors who make a habit of migrating south for the winter about not being able to vote in the November vote. However, Avis expressed concern about people who have no stake in the community taking advantage of the situation.
"I would like to see this for someone who contributes to the community, whose heart is in the community, but I'm not sure how far it extends."
