Forest fire hits Fraser Canyon
July 3rd, 2008
LYTTON - A forest fire forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon east of Hope for several hours Wednesday.
Sparked when a vehicle caught fire Sunday, the forest fire took off on Jackass Mountain and spread to 130 hectares as four helicopters, a rappel crew and 100 firefighters were moved in.
A stretch of highway 25 km east of Boston Bar at the Jackass Mountain summit was closed, although the spread of the fire was contained in the steep terrain along the highway. Single-lane traffic was being let through in both directions by Wednesday afternoon.
The fire did not threaten any structures, and neither did the Red Rock fire near in South Okanagan Mountain Park.
A crew of 20 continued Wednesday to chase hot spots in the fire, which spread to more than five hectares.
The Red Rock fire was sparked Monday by lightning.
With the camping season getting underway, the B.C. forest service is asking all people to take care with fire. Campfires are still allowed in all regions, but there are restrictions on open fires in the Coastal, Kamloops and Southeast forest districts.
