Charge stayed

May 13th, 2008

NANAIMO - An Island man alleged to have tampered with a dead body found in April, 2006 is unlikely to face trial in wake of a decision by Crown prosecutors to stay proceedings.

Michael Dennis Cork, 43, of Campbell River stood accused of improperly or indecently interfering with or offering indignity to a dead human body or human remains.

The charge stemmed from discovery of the body of 45 year-old Victoria resident Joseph Andreas Thomas Lejeune, on a back road in the Horne Lake area.

Foul play was at first suspected, however investigators later suggested that may not have been the case.

Crown delivered the stay April 7 and can decide to move forth on the same charge within 12 months. - Fred Davies
