Police hunt for man after scuffle
By
Neil Horner July 7th, 2008
A suspected teenage thief appears to have fared poorly after being confronted with the 72-year-old owner of the garage he is believed to have broken into.
Oceanside RCMP Corporal Garry Cox said the incident took place Friday afternoon at a home on Harlech Road in Qualicum Beach, when the homeowner was watering his garden.
"He came around the side of the garage and found a male coming out of the garage, pushing a bicycle,"
Cox said. "They had a conversation and then, as the male was attempting to leave, the homeowner attempted to apprehend him for police."
A minor scuffle took place, Cox said.
"The homeowner received scrapes on his knees and his left knee received a one and a half-inch laceration,"Cox said. "He had blood on his face and head, which he said came from the suspect."
The suspect fled the scene down the railway tracks on foot, leaving his bicycle behind.
Police called in the dog team to track the young man, but were unable to locate him.
"Police did locate some evidence, so we will be analyzing it to see who the suspect might be,"Cox said. "We are looking for a white male, 18 years old, with curly hair, wearing a white coloured shirt with horizontal stripes, dark pants or jeans. He will have had blood on him."
Cox said police don't recommend homeowners attempt to apprehend suspects in such a manner, but noted he understands how it happened in this case.
"This was an unusual circumstance, whereby he just happened to come across the guy while he was coming out of his garage,"Cox said. "It's a normal human reaction to see what's going on and one can find oneself in an altercation pretty quickly. If their intent is to flee without being apprehended, they'll do what it takes to get away, whether it means violence or damaging property. However, in this case, I think the suspect ended up getting the worst of it."
