Regional district about to take action on water
By

The News continues Tipping Point - a semi-regular compendium of local and international environmental briefs.
• The RDN is proposing an Action for Water plan to increase understanding and improve protection of ground and surface water sources. Residents will be asked during a November referendum if they support a $25 annual parcel tax in electoral areas to fund the new initiative. The goal is to make regional watershed protection a part of the RDN's daily operations. Watch future issues of The News for more on the plan.
• Pollution charges have been laid in connection to last summer's barge spill in Robson Bight, a protected marine area known for its resident killer whale population. The Campbell River tugboat operator and a logging contractor face charges for unlawfully discharging oil into the water.
• The Regional District of Nanaimo has adopted a new green building policy which is among the first of its kind in the province. It features an integrated design process as the foundation for all new RDN construction and major renovations. The aim is to maximum reductions in greenhouse gas emissions associated with building operations.
Still wondering how best to spend your climate action dividend? An e-mail circulating among local environmentalists has an idea. Donations to adopt-a-fry.org will help Alexandra Morton in a fight against fish farms on the B.C. coast. Morton says sea lice are killing wild salmon and is taking his fight against the regulatory impasse blamed for the problem to B.C. Supreme Court.
