Carbon tax backed by university professors group
July 3rd, 2008
VICTORIA - A group of university professors is defending B.C.'s new carbon tax as a brave attempt to end Canada's history of hypocrisy on climate change.
More than a decade after Canada signed the Kyoto Protocol to reduce greenhouse gases, B.C.'s effort is the first real step to doing something about it, said SFU resource economist Mark Jaccard, who is acting as an advisor to the province's climate action team.
The carbon tax is transparent, and it requires less bureaucracy than carbon trading schemes, which B.C. and other jurisdictions are hoping to set up, he said.
Jaccard said he's appalled at the number of media reports that detail the new carbon tax on gasoline, diesel, natural gas, propane and coal but don't mention the corresponding income tax cuts. He said the opposition NDP is also spreading misinformation. - Black Press
